MENTAL HEALTH IN RURAL INDIA

The increase in population, change in lifestyle, choices, lack of jobs the world is facing a drastic change in mental health. The urban life has accepted mental illness or mental health as a matter of concern, while the rural part of India still has stigmas and superstitions when it comes to psychological issues some people still feel ashamed, isolated, harassed and neglected when it comes to the illness of the mind.

The rural part of India still struggles when
 it comes to treatment for mental health. The infrastructure, acceptance, concerns are still poor in the country sides. The label of insane, humiliation, bullying and ignorance still bothers a huge number of people. In the recent period of Covid19 the lockdown has brought a rise to poverty, unemployment, depression, isolation and rise in mental health in people. According to the SMART mental health project about 10% Indians suffer from stress, depression or substance use disorders.Young people and children have the highest place when it comes to psychological distress like anxiety, depression, BPD.The shutdown of schools, colleges, gatherings have pushed the students to isolation and a darker financial crisis. Children are facing a rush of fear, anxiety; fear of death, triggering contents all around, in short, the social support has declined. 46 percent of teens are facing mental issues. More parents of teen girls than parents of teen boys reported an increase in anxiety or depression. It has been advised to maintain strict isolation but people are asked to constantly stay in touch (virtually) with their friends, family, peers for support.

The government has issued a helpline like NIMHANS for everybody who needs to vent out or talk  to, in these tough times. NGOS like Minds at PlayMinds foundation have also come up with helping hands for the common people.
